Cantinho da Baía is the corner of the Baleal bay next to the isthmus, right in front of the beach bars. It is a safe, fun beach break for learners and intermediates, and the busiest surf-school spot in the Peniche area. Baleal island shelters it from the north, so the summer north wind is nearly offshore here.

Travel notes

How often it works
Very consistent and able to work all year. It is the go-to summer spot when the north wind ruins the open beaches.
Crowd and vibe
Ultra crowded in August and busy with surf schools most of the year. The line-up feels like a bar in summer, wannasurf says, but it is friendly.
Camping and vans
PenichePraia, 6 minutes' drive from Baleal, is about 2 km away. Portuguese road law bans motorhome overnight stays outside authorised places in protected areas, Natura 2000 sites and zones covered by the coastal plans, and limits other overnight stops to 48 hours per municipality. Nearest campsite about 2 km away.
Facilities
Lifeguards in season, a first-aid post, toilets, showers, many surf schools and beach bars.
Water quality
Baleal Sul was rated excellent in APA's latest annual classification and flies a Blue Flag in 2026.
