Barrika is a wild 600 m beach about 25 km from Bilbao, below tall cliffs of folded flysch rock. The shore is a mix of sand, cobbles and rock slabs, and at high tide most of the sand disappears. Several peaks break over the mixed bottom, and the standout is a long, manoeuvrable left with soft walls that longboarders love. It gets crowded on good days.

Local tips

Rock slabs line the bottom, so watch where the locals sit and enter and leave the water carefully. Check the tide table before you go. The clifftop bar is a popular place to watch the sunset after a session.

Getting there

Park on the clifftop and take the long concrete stairs down to the beach. Lifeguards work in summer, and the coastal path links Barrika with Sopela and Plentzia.
