Meñakoz is a cobble and boulder cove below high cliffs on the boundary of Sopela and Barrika. It is home to one of Europe's best-known big-wave rights. In a large swell it breaks with Hawaiian-style power over rock, holding five to six metres, with very hollow sections. A north swell gives a shorter wave, while north-west swells give longer rides of up to about 150 m. Surfers have gathered here since the 1970s.

Local tips

It is for very experienced big-wave surfers only, since the currents and nearby rocks make every fall serious. Watch out for the section called Los Calvos, where rocks can break the surface and many people have been hurt. Respect the locals and wave priority, because getting into trouble in front of the cliffs can turn bad quickly.

Getting there

A steep path leads down from a small car park on top of the cliff, about five minutes on foot. There is a fountain but no lifeguards or other services.

History

Meñakoz was one of the first gathering places for surfers in the Basque Country in the 1970s.
