Le Truc Vert is the best-known surf beach of the Cap Ferret peninsula, a long beach enclosed by the state forest and high dunes and named after the large campsite behind it. It is one of the most consistent spots in the area, and when the sandbars line up it gives hollow, punchy lefts and rights, often a good right off the main peak on a morning offshore. The bars are unstable, so a classic bank can appear and vanish within weeks, and reading them is half the game. A strong current along the beach and long paddle-outs on bigger days make it best for confident intermediates and above, though surf schools teach beginners on the inside in summer.

Local tips

Surf the morning, when the wind is most often offshore, and expect to drift: the current usually pulls you along the beach, so start up-current of your peak and watch your landmark on the dune. Walk away from the campsite accesses for a quieter bank; locals point to the second access past the campsite, La Pantoufle. Outside summer the locals are friendly but expect normal priority rules, so wait your turn and never drop in. Low tide shows the rip channels clearly as dark gaps between the white water, which helps you pick a way out.

Getting there

From Lège-Cap-Ferret take the D106 south to Petit Piquey and follow the signs along the forest road to Le Truc Vert, about an hour from Bordeaux. Park at the campsite area and walk a few minutes through the pines and over the dune on the wooden walkways either side of the campsite; surf schools operate here in summer.

History

Truc Vert is a well-known natural laboratory for coastal scientists, who have run many beach and rip current experiments on its sandbars.

Travel notes

How often it works
Wannasurf counts about 150 surfable days a year, and surf-forecast agrees it is consistent. The sandbanks tend to settle, which makes it reliable.
Crowd and vibe
It is unlikely to be very crowded, even with good waves. Locals are friendly to visitors who wait their turn, but less so in summer.
Camping and vans
Camping Sandaya Le Truc Vert sits right behind the beach, about 700 m from the main peak. Camping Siblu Les Viviers in Claouey is about 5 km away. Nearest campsite about 0.5 km away.
Facilities
There are wooden walkways over the dune, a summer lifeguard post and surf schools in summer.
Water quality
The Truc Vert monitoring point was rated good every season from 2022 to 2025, and all five 2026 samples were good.
