The Grande Plage of Vieux-Boucau is a typical Landes beach break whose sandbar often holds good shape and is well known to local surfers. Unusually for this coast it is often at its best toward high tide, when the bank works properly and the lineup fills up. The rights can be good but often close out, while La Sud nearby is known for hollow lefts. On good days rides along the bar can be long, and the spot suits intermediates and up.

Local tips

High tide is when the bank comes alive and when everyone paddles out, so expect company on good days. The currents are strong, and the baïnes north of Les Sablères are just as dangerous as those in front of town. The lineup is relaxed if you keep a low profile.

Getting there

From Soustons take the D652 to Vieux-Boucau and cross the town to the seafront; parking and the beach are close together, with surf schools and shops in the village.

Travel notes

How often it works
It is reliable all year, with both wind waves and distant swells. But the sandbank in front of town works best around high tide.
Crowd and vibe
Forecast sites say it is rarely too crowded. Good high-tide sessions bring everyone out at once. Stay low-key and the line-up is easy-going.
Camping and vans
The town campsite, Camping Les Sablères, has direct beach access about 150 m from the sand, roughly 1 km north. The village aire in town has 150 places, is open all year and has a 24-hour limit. Nearest campsite about 1 km away.
Facilities
Vieux-Boucau has car parks near the beach, toilets, cafés, restaurants, surf schools, shops and a lifeguarded beach in summer.
Water quality
All three of Vieux-Boucau's bathing sites are rated excellent in the official French rating (national open data, 2022).
