Plentzia is a sheltered town beach next to Gorliz, at the mouth of the Plentzia estuary. The river mouth shapes mostly lefts over sand, and the protection of the bay means it needs a big swell to break with quality. That makes it a refuge when the open coast is too big, and a calm spot for beginners, longboarders and surf schools. The fresh water from the estuary mixes with the sea here.

Local tips

Come here when the exposed beaches are maxed out. The estuary current sometimes helps you paddle back to the peak, but watch where it is pulling. It gets busy with schools when it breaks.

Getting there

A large car park sits right in front of the beach, and Plentzia is the end of Bilbao metro line 1.
