Karraspio is a sandy beach in Mendexa, across the river from Lekeitio, with San Nicolás island just offshore. It has shifting peaks in both directions, and the best wave is usually a longer left at the western end near the rocks. Swell passing the east side of the island can sometimes produce a quality left. It is a good beach for learning and progressing, and it is usually less crowded than better-known spots.

Local tips

It is one of the few Basque beaches that can still be surfed in a westerly wind, so keep it in mind on those days. Autumn and winter bring the most reliable swell. In summer the waves shrink and the beach fills with visitors.

Getting there

The beach is a short walk across the bridge from Lekeitio, with parking nearby. At low tide you can walk out to San Nicolás island.
