La Espasa is a long beach on the Caravia–Colunga border, with the Sueve mountains behind it. It is an easy, open beach break with three main peaks: a left near the river mouth, a central peak and a right. The waves are fun rather than powerful, good for learning and for relaxed sessions on small to medium swells. It is a reference spot for longboarding in Asturias.

When it works

✓ A 1.2–2 m north-west or north swell at low to mid tide, with a south or south-east wind.

When it doesn't

✕ High tide leaves only a shorebreak, onshore wind such as a westerly wrecks it, and big swells bring strong currents.

Watch out for

  • currents
  • rips

Best months

April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November

Local tips

The left by the river mouth is usually the best-shaped wave. Low and mid tide work best. Local schools give lessons and rent boards.

Getting there

A large car park sits right by the beach, off the road to Colunga. There are toilets, showers, summer lifeguards and bars nearby.

History

The beach hosts the Motorbeach festival each summer.

Travel notes

How often it works
Needs about a metre of north-west or north groundswell to start breaking. Bigger swells mostly bring stronger currents rather than better waves, so it is best on small to medium days.
Crowd and vibe
Surf reports describe only a few surfers, even at weekends. The beach itself gets very busy with bathers in summer, and surf-school groups use the gentle peaks.
Camping and vans
No campsite is listed at La Espasa itself. The nearest are Camping Arenal de Morís, about 2.5 km east in Caravia, and Camping Costa Verde at La Griega, about 4.5 km west. Nearest campsite about 2.5 km away.
Facilities
Parking, showers, summer lifeguards, beach bars and restaurants shared with neighbouring La Isla, plus a surf school.
Water quality
The EU rated the bathing water Excellent every season from 2015 to 2025. It is not on the 2026 Bandera Azul list.
