Vega, also called Berbes, is a long, open beach of 1.5 km west of Ribadesella. It is backed by protected dunes, and there are dinosaur footprints in the nearby cliffs. It is one of the most exposed beaches in the area, so it catches swell when nearby beaches are flat. Peaks shift along the sand and give good lefts and rights that suit every level on small days. It doesn't hold much size, and streams draining old fluorite mines sometimes stain the water.

When it works
✓ A small 0.8–1.5 m north to north-west swell with a south wind, at any tide.
When it doesn't
✕ Anything much over 1.5 m closes it out, and the open beach suffers in any onshore wind.
Watch out for
- currents
- rips
Best months
May, June, July, August, September, October
Local tips
Check it on small days when other beaches are flat. Even in summer the long beach gives room, so walk away from the busy entrance.
Getting there
The road down crosses the Hoces de Entrepeña gorge from the N-632. There is a large car park and an accessible path to the sand.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- Fully open to the sea, it catches small swells and often has waves when other spots are flat. It struggles once the swell goes much over 1.5 m.
- Crowd and vibe
- A popular beach in summer, but its length spreads people out. Surf schools use it, and outside summer only a few surfers turn up.
- Camping and vans
- Camping Playa de Vega is in La Vega, about 1 km from the beach. Ribadesella's free área de autocaravanas on the San Pedro road is about 4.5 km east. Nearest campsite about 1 km away.
- Facilities
- Toilets, showers, bars near the entrance, a large car park and lifeguards from mid June to mid September.
- Water quality
- Old surf guides called it polluted by nearby mining, but official Náyade tests from 2023 to 2026 show clean water, with every sample fit for bathing.
