Santa Marina is Ribadesella's town beach, a wide curve of sand running west from the mouth of the Sella, under La Guía. Peaks break left and right along it, with the most power at the west end. At the river end a good sandbank can give a long, quality left, and the river keeps reshaping the banks. It picks up less swell than the open beaches, but the headlands shield it from most winds, so it often works when others close out. It has a long surf tradition and suits all levels; it is busy with schools, rentals and locals.

Local tips

The west end has the most power. Winter swells can bring uncrowded sessions, but on big days large sets breaking further out catch people out. It is busy with locals, so a respectful attitude in the water avoids trouble.

Getting there

It is the town beach, with road access, parking and public services along the promenade.

History

The beach is the finish line of the Descenso Internacional del Sella, the canoe race held every summer.

Travel notes

How often it works
It picks up less swell than the open beaches nearby, and summer is often flat. It is sheltered from most winds except the north, so it works when other spots are blown out.
Crowd and vibe
Crowded at weekends and in summer, with schools and a strong local crew. Winter weekdays can be almost empty, and a respectful attitude keeps things easy.
Camping and vans
Camping Los Sauces and Camping Ribadesella, in Sebreño, are both about 1.5 km away. A free área de autocaravanas on the San Pedro road allows 48-hour stays, but no tables or awnings. Nearest campsite about 1.5 km away.
Facilities
A full town beach with toilets, showers, chiringuitos, a promenade, surf schools and lifeguards from mid June to mid September.
Water quality
Náyade tests here vary more than at nearby beaches, and the Sella river and the town are right beside it. There was a no-bathing advice in late August 2023, so skip it after heavy rain.
