La Griega is an 820 m sheltered beach at the mouth of the Libardón river near Colunga. It is famous for the giant dinosaur footprints in the rocks a short walk east. It needs a proper north-west groundswell (a long-period swell from a distant storm) to wrap in. Then it gives clean, protected peaks with long rides, including a left off the point, when the open beaches are too big. Summer is mostly flat, and it is quiet most of the year.

When it works

When it doesn't

Local tips
Wait for a solid groundswell and surf the rising tide from low. July and August bring beach crowds but rarely waves.
Getting there
La Griega is reached by road from Colunga. There is parking, accessible walkways, showers, toilets and summer lifeguards, with a campsite about 200 m away.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- Fickle. The bay is tucked away from most swell, so even in its best winter months it is too small most of the time. It needs a big north-west groundswell, which makes it a back-up for stormy days.
- Crowd and vibe
- It very rarely gets crowded, and surfers rate it as quiet. Summer brings families to the sand but seldom any waves.
- Camping and vans
- Camping Costa Verde sits at Playa la Griega, about half a kilometre from the break. It opens from mid-May to about 21 September. Nearest campsite about 0.5 km away.
- Facilities
- Showers and toilets (including accessible ones), food and drink, parking and lifeguards every day from 20 June to early September.
- Water quality
- The EU rated the water Good in most seasons since 2015, and Excellent in 2023 and 2025. The Libardón river enters the sea here.
