Le Gressier is the main beach of Le Porge-Océan, a long natural strip of sand between the forest and the dunes with only a few shops behind the dune and no buildings on the beach. It is a typical Gironde beach break: shifting bars and baïnes throw up triangular peaks around mid tide, with a good right now and then when a bank lines up. It picks up plenty of swell and holds well into the 2–2.5 m range. In summer the guarded zone and the surf schools make it a learning beach, while autumn and spring bring more powerful, better-shaped waves for experienced surfers.

Local tips

Go early: the surf is often cleanest at dawn before the wind turns onshore. Weekdays are quiet but weekends and July–August get busy, partly because of the large campsite near the main access, so walk along the beach to spread out. A kitesurf zone lies a few hundred metres south of the lifeguard post; keep clear of it. Watch the baïne currents, especially if you swim after the session.

Getting there

Follow the signs from Le Porge to Le Porge-Océan along a straight forest road of about 10 km, one of the quickest beaches to reach from Bordeaux. A large free car park of around 2,500 spaces sits a few hundred metres behind the dune, with boardwalk paths over to the beach and a lifeguard post in summer.
