Area Maior is a wild, sheltered beach below Monte Louro near Muros. It faces south-west into the mouth of the Ría de Muros, with dunes between it and the Xarfas lagoon and no buildings in sight. The waves are often small and soft, fun rather than powerful, with several peaks; the best known is a right at the Ancoradoiro end, where the beach starts. Peaks come and go with the tide, so it can be surfed all day. West and south-west swells in spring and autumn suit it best, but it doesn't hold big swell.

Travel notes
- How often it works
- It needs some swell but works on small to medium days, and peaks shift with the tide so it can be surfed all day. On big swells it maxes out and other spots nearby are better.
- Crowd and vibe
- Usually quiet, and often nearly empty in winter. Weekends bring more people, but it rarely gets past a small group of 10 to 20 surfers.
- Camping and vans
- Camping Ancoradoiro, a seasonal campsite in the pine wood, is about 1 km away (it gives 800 m to Area Maior). Camping San Francisco and Cámping da Vouga are about 2.5–3 km away, and there is an área de autocaravanas at Ancoradoiro. Nearest campsite about 1 km away.

- Only parking at the beach itself, with no buildings around; Camping Ancoradoiro nearby has showers, toilets and a surf school.
