Peñarronda is a long, north-facing beach of fine golden sand near the Eo estuary, the westernmost surf spot in Asturias. It is named after the round rock stack on its sand and has been a Natural Monument since 2002. Several peaks along the beach give good lefts and rights on north to north-west swell, even small ones, best at mid tide. The shape of the bay and the dunes soften the waves, so it suits beginners, but good days give long, powerful rides. Currents run along the beach.

Local tips
Mid tide is ideal. A strong current runs beside the main peak, and the sand drops off quickly where the waves break. Summer brings crowds of swimmers, so surf early or late.
Getting there
Free parking is a few hundred metres away, a five-minute walk. There are showers, toilets and summer lifeguards.
History
The beach is a Natural Monument and lies within the Río Eo, Oscos and Terras de Burón Biosphere Reserve.
