Tapia de Casariego is the surf heart of western Asturias. The main inlet beach beside the town, La Grande or Anguileiro, has several peaks over sand and flat rock, mostly rights. Its prized left peels off the rock reef into the sand and is best at mid tide. When it works the waves are hollow and fast, ideally around 1.5 m. Tapia has a long-established surf community and has hosted a surf contest every Easter since 1971.

Local tips

The left over the rocks is for experienced surfers and is best at mid tide. Locals have surfed here for decades, so respect the etiquette and their priority. September is often better than July and August.

Getting there

The beach is in the town, with parking nearby, showers and a seafront promenade.

History

Australian surfers brought surfing here in the 1960s. The international Memorial Peter Gulley contest has been held in Tapia every Easter week since 1971.

Travel notes

How often it works
Guides disagree. One says it can be surfed all year, but surfers report it needs the right swell, and July and August are often small. September is usually better.
Crowd and vibe
Quiet on weekdays but crowded at weekends. The surf community has been here for decades and is friendly, but expects visitors to respect the locals and basic etiquette.
Camping and vans
Camping Playa de Tapia is about 500 m from the beach, open from late March to the end of September. Tapia also has a paid área de autocaravanas (about 7 to 9 euros a night, with water and waste dump), and a 2025 town bylaw regulates overnight parking on the streets. Nearest campsite about 0.5 km away.
Facilities
Showers, toilets, food, motorhome parking and lifeguards from late June to early September; Escuela de Surf Picante teaches on the beach.
Water quality
Not on the 2026 Blue Flag list, and we found no official water rating.
