Bakio is a town beach of about one kilometre, the longest in Bizkaia, open to the sea and one of the places where Basque surfing grew up. Because it is so exposed, it picks up swell most of the year and is one of the best options in the area during summer. Peaks in both directions break along the beach on sand, with some rock. At the eastern end, by the cliffs, Peña Roja is a faster, hollow right that holds more size and suits advanced surfers.

Local tips
Its consistency and easy access bring crowds, so spread out along the beach. Leave Peña Roja to experienced surfers on the bigger days. When Mundaka is flat, Bakio is usually the next place to check.
Getting there
The beach runs along the town's promenade, with parking, surf schools and plenty of places to eat. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is a short drive away.
History
One year the final of the Mundaka world tour contest was moved to Bakio because Mundaka lacked power, and Andy Irons won it, according to a user report on Wannasurf.
