Mundaka is a left-hand rivermouth wave at the mouth of the Oka estuary, inside the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve. It is widely called the best left in Europe. A sandbar at the mouth turns north-west swells into a fast, hollow wall that can run up to about 400 m towards the inner estuary, with long barrel sections. It starts at around one to one and a half metres and holds four metres or more. Strong currents, a shallow bar and very crowded line-ups make it a wave for advanced and expert surfers only.

Local tips
Paddle out from the small harbour and use the rip current that runs back to the line-up. Up to 140 surfers have been counted on good days, and locals expect visitors to come in small groups and wait their turn. The take-off looks easier than it is, and the current tires you quickly, so you need to be fit.
Getting there
The wave is visible from the road between Gernika and Bermeo. Park near the church and walk to the harbour, while the harbour wall and the Atalaya lookout are the classic places to watch from.
History
The Billabong Pro Mundaka was a stop on the ASP world tour from 1998 to 2009, and surfers such as Andy Irons, Kelly Slater, Taj Burrow and Joel Parkinson competed here. The wave depends on the sandbar, and sand dredged from the estuary to refill nearby beaches each summer is a long-standing threat to its consistency.
