La Central breaks in Basordas cove, in front of the abandoned Lemoiz nuclear power plant on the cliffs between Bakio and Armintza. It is a dangerous, shifting left over a rock shelf, with extremely hollow, sucking sections. It needs a north-west swell of around two to three metres and southerly wind. It is known as one of the best bodyboard waves in Europe, and only a few strong surfers ride it stand-up.

Local tips

Go with someone who knows the spot, because locals surf it when it is on and the rocks punish mistakes. Getting in over the rocks is fairly easy, but getting out is the hard part. Guides suggest a boat as the better option.

Getting there

From Lemoiz follow the BI-2120 towards Bakio, then climb down the rocks below the plant, about 15 minutes on foot.

History

The Lemoiz plant was built but never started up, after strong public opposition, and its structure still dominates the cove.

Travel notes

Water quality
La Central is not an official bathing point. The nearest rated beach, Armintza, is only sufficient, the lowest pass mark (Basque Government, 2026). We could not confirm Blue Flag status or any official note on run-off after rain.
