Lanzarote and Fuerteventura in the guides

  • Surfing in January
January is the heart of the Atlantic storm season. Thick wetsuits in the north, warm water in the Canaries, and powerful swells that wake up Nazaré, Mundaka, Thurso East and the island reefs.
  • Surfing in February
The volcanic reefs of La Santa and Fuerteventura's North Shore work on winter's north swells, in water around 18 °C. Many are heavy and localised; Famara's long beach suits everyone else.
  • Surfing in March
March is one of the most underrated months: winter-sized swells start to calm down, the days get long, and the line-ups are still empty from Brittany to Scotland. The water, though, is as cold as it gets, unless you head for the islands.
  • Surfing in April
The tail of the winter season, with steady north swells, water around 18.5 °C and Famara's long beach for every level.
  • Surfing in October
The north swell season begins in the Canaries, and Lobos' long right off Corralejo comes to life, in water around 23 °C.
  • Surfing in November
November turns the dial towards winter across Europe: swells grow, the reefs and points light up from the Basque Country to Ericeira, Cornwall and Thurso, and the beaches belong to locals again. Pack a thicker suit, or head for the islands.
  • Surfing in December
The winter north swells light up the volcanic reefs of La Santa and Fuerteventura's North Shore, in water around 20 °C.
  • Best spots to learn to surf
Famara, a long beach under high cliffs, is the centre of surfing on Lanzarote, where most of the island's schools teach. A winter option, with mild water.
  • Big waves and expert spots
The waves that make Europe famous among experienced surfers: Nazaré's giants, the big-wave reefs of Ireland, the Basque Country and Madeira, world-class rivermouths and points, and the heaviest beach breaks and slabs. For watching from the cliffs, or for surfing only if you truly have the skills.
  • Canary Islands surf trip
Fuerteventura's North Shore reefs and the long right at Lobos, then the La Santa reefs and Famara beach on Lanzarote, the heart of winter surfing in the Canaries.
  • Winter sun surf trip
The barren North Shore of Fuerteventura, El Cotillo's west-facing beach and Famara's long beach below the cliffs.
